Years ago I considered becoming a bartender and attended the International Bartending Institute. Two weeks and $200 later I had my IBI diploma, and looked into a few bartending jobs, but never really went past the looking phase. In those days, bars were full of smokers, and that was a turnoff, but being in California that wouldn't be a problem. Bars are still full of drunks, however, and you'll have to deal with them. Also, as in retail, you'll be working with people who are, for the most part, much younger. Finally, while you can make a lot of money, you have to work nights and weekends for that to happen. I definitely think you should look into bartending, but go into it with your eyes open. The money can be good, but there are also certain negatives. By the way, I've just stumbled on your diary and started reading it, so I have a lot of catching up to do, but it's very interesting. It's good to see someone going after a dream. Good luck.
