So...should you have something to fall back on? Or not? We were just discussing this in the greenroom the other day. One actor said, you should learn to type! I would tend to agree. I would rather not have to "fall back on something". But, until that big break comes along...

I would say "learning to type" does NOT constitute "something to fall back on. That's just having a skill you can make money from WHILE you're working on your career (After all, we all need to EAT). I think what Mamet's talking about is getting a teaching degree or being a business major, basically planning to fail as an artist from the get-go...For myself, I wouldn't argue that's it a VIRTUE or anything, but I really DON'T have anything else. I know I'm an actor, and wouldn't be content with anything else.

"outward directedness" Wow, Jim, that's a great one! (I've not been a big fan of Mamet's plays so have avoided his books, stupid me.) It says to me that in TRULY listening and caring about what the other person says, the reaction is, therefore, quite real, honest. What more could a method actor (or director) ask for from a dialogue?
