I know what you mean, in a way. I've always worked jobs where I was expected to fill in the gaps of others - my current position is particularly frustrating in this manner. But don't you get tips working in the Cafe'? If you got more training, would it make you more comfortable to fill in? Just a thought.

I don't know... the cafe/janitor analogy doesn't work for me. Working in the cafe actually sounds like more fun than being a book seller -- but I haven't "been there," and the important thing is that it strikes YOU as an "insult," for whatever reason. No, maybe the MORE important thing is that you thought twice and weighed your options and did it anyway. That short fuse lengthens with age/wisdom/perspective.

I can't quite identify, either, Jim. I work retail, and while I wouldn't be thrilled to clean toilets, etc., the bonus to doing it is not having to deal with some of the customers! I guess I figure if I have to be there, I'll do whatever they want me to do - I want to be the "go to" girl - and if it takes me OUT of direct contact with the customers, I personally consider it a plus! Bottom line: working the cafe wouldn't be wonderful for me, either, but it'd be a lot better than working the check-out lane (everything is relative).

I know EXACTLY what you meant. I always feared they would put me in the cafe, so I worked real hard and moved up to Special Orders for that very reason! Ha. Pretty funny, actually, considering that Spo was its own "special" little hell. Have you ever filled in for music? I always feared I'd have to do that, too, and dreaded it. Their system of organization never made any sense to me in music.
