Sorry to hear that things with you and Tony took such a bad turn. I know you and I have discussed this before, about the ugliness on Facebook. I've been through it before (though not as heated as your and Tony's situation). Last fall, during the Right to Work protests in Michigan and right after Sandy Hook, I had some uncomfortable exchanges with some of my conservative friends from "back home" in the Thumb of Michigan. It was at that point that I decided I wanted to back away a little from the political stuff on Facebook--just a personal decision. It seemed like all I was doing was either preaching to the converted (the folks already on my side) and pissing off the people on "the other side." I decided to be more pro-active in my political angst. I wrote a letter about gun control to Rep. Mike Rogers, I called the Governor's office about the DIA situation in Detroit. It made me feel good to be confronting elected officials and actually taking ACTION, which I somehow haven't done much of since I was a fresh-faced youngster just of out of college. (Back when I actually went to protests and worked a bit on Clinton's '92 campaign). About the current mess in Washington. Jim, that is pretty much exactly how I feel. There do seem to be certain rules our elected officials should follow: Your side lost...deal with it. I'm also disgusted with how "compromise" is a word that no longer has any meaning in Washington. In short, I'm completely disgusted with almost EVERYONE in Washington, but particularly the meanspirited Tea Party Republicans and their minions. Wow, that was a long comment!

Agree with Mark N. that Facebook politics is usually "preaching to the converted and pissing off the other side" - which is why I RARELY even "like" anything political on Facebook. I hope you can still keep some touch with your Mom through this - I guess would have to be snail-mail.
