Tomorrow I make history.
Just me and my buddy Josh and thousands of our closest friends.
After an ultimately unsuccessful negotiation with the AMPTP (Association of Motion Picture and Television Producers) over the particulars of our theatrical and TV contract, the SAG-AFTRA negotiators went to the board to advise a strike (The general membership authorized a strike, were it to come to that, a couple months ago).
The board said yes, so as of midnight, we're on strike.
I've been very impressed with the WGA - 70-some days into their strike and they're still showing up on the picket lines in a big way - so I'm hoping that SAG-AFTRA, which is a much larger union (160,000 members, versus 11,000 for the WGA) will really "up the ante".
This is the first time both unions have been on strike since 1980 (To give you a sense of how long ago that was - This sexy senior citizen was a sexy high school senior).
So I was kinda joking about "making history"...but kinda not.
At the very least, it's going to be interesting to see what happens.
(Josh and I are going to Disney tomorrow - Bob Iger gave an especially stupid statement to the press today, so we thought it would be nice if there were an especially impressive show-of-force in his backyard.)
Well, you'll no doubt be hearing a lot more from me about this in the days to come, so I'll spare you for now...
That's the big news.
Jane will be back in town in about two weeks. She won't be here long, but I'm telling myself that's a good thing - I can't say it's ever become ho-hum to have her in town.
(And besides, I'll be headed her way toward the end of next month, to attend the film festival in Albuquerque.)
As I think I've mentioned, while Jane's here, we'll be hitting a couple museums, which I expect will be fun.
But honestly, I'm more enthused about "the little things", our little routines, like going to Blick art supply, eating at House of Pies, or watching Curb Your Enthusiasm at her place.
Stuff like that.
(What can I say? I'm a simple man.)
I've been enjoying the "movement classes" at GenSpace - I'm taking three now (A Korean type of "Tai Chi" and two "Zumba-esque" dance classes) - and as I was doing one of the dance classes today, for a hot minute I thought, "If I work at getting my stamina up, maybe I could front a class like this...".
(I've been trying to think of what I could maybe do for extra income that wouldn't involve any phrases like "Welcome to Walmart!" or "Would you like fries with that?".)
It was fun, after class today, to hear that a woman there I find quite attractive told a woman in my drawing class that I'm "a good dancer" (The "attractive woman" in question is old enough that she has gray hair and attends some classes herself, but young enough that she brings her mother, which I think is the main reason she's there).
(I don't expect any sparks to fly here...but it's nice to be noticed by someone you've been noticing, know what I mean?)
Well, if I searched my giant brain, I could probably come up with some more things to write about...but since I've got to get up relatively early tomorrow to work the picket lines, I should probably work on getting myself ready for bed.
Till next time...
