Just Keep Swinging (Till They Take Your Bat Away)

(Expecting a call from Mark and Jane at 3:30, so we'll see how far I get on this...)

When I last wrote, if you recall, I mentioned having had two theatrical auditions, but thinking nothing had come of them?

Well, shortly after I finished the entry, I got an email from Ralph, my theatrical guy, forwarding a message from Casting on the Ryan Murphy thing.

They'd sent my audition to Producers, so were asking about my availability for the shoot on Thursday.

So it was a moderately exciting 18 hours or so, until Ralph texted to say it hadn't gone my way.

I say it was "moderately" exciting because...well, I don't really know why I wasn't more excited - Maybe because I'm something of a veteran of having them be 'interested" in me, only to lose out to "some other guy".

And while it didn't mean I was going to get paid to do acting or anything like that, in something of a "consolation prize", I was at least low-level pleased that I'd had a good feel for how well I'd auditioned - I'd said I thought I'd done well enough that I wouldn't be surprised to book it, then got within shouting distance of booking it.

(I've developed the distinct feeling that Casting people, overall, like me better than Producers do. And I don't know what to do about that, other than to keep swinging...at least till they take my bat away.)

After five days of not much going on, I had a delightful two days at GenSpace this past week (And was proud of myself, on Wednesday, for both walking there and taking the 107 stairs up).

But Wednesday and Thursday went by in a hurry, and I was low-level dreading the "five days of nothing" that were coming up again.

But I ended up having quite a busy day yesterday.

In the morning I had a commercial self-tape, which I felt I handled pretty well (Especially since I had to improv being a know-it-all about something I know next to nothing about).

It was also my first time using the camera remote that came with a tripod I recently purchased on the TikTok Shop. That's going to save me so much time editing out my starting and stopping - I don't think "game changer" is too strong a phrase here.

The Zoom audition, in comparison, felt like a dud.

Part of that was on me - I got a little over-excited when the role was a middle-aged guy painting an action figure, another "role I was born to play", which I could bullshit about for days (Even though I don't paint my figures in real life, for fear I'm gonna fuck them up).

However, unlike the earlier self-tape, there was no improv involved, just "business", so I could have been reading a book or scrolling through TikTok or jerking off - My action figure experience/knowledge didn't factor in at all.

But part of it being a dud was also just circumstance (I set up early, with my table & chair, and props, in the area where I do all my self-tapes. But due to the time of day and the fact I was seated, I quickly realized anytime I moved my head I was bleached out by the sun, so I had to re-set everything - the only saving grace was that I discovered this "before" the audition and not "during". But it was not "optimal".

So the first audition felt like I "did something", and might get the thing because of "choices" I made, while the other felt like a "face lottery".

And given a choice, while I want to win regardless - because money is a thing - I'd rather win because I "did something" than it just being "the luck of the draw"

Then I took a little break, watched some more Blacklist, then did a Cameo that had come in early that morning.

Just when I thought I knew everything about Cameos, I discovered, as the person buying the Cameo, you have to pay a premium if you want to really "load up" the person doing your Cameo with a script/a load of detail.

So the gentleman buying the Cameo from me had written a script, which I mostly did as written - though I inserted one line of his into my version of "The Birthday Song" and added something to it, and altered another line to make it funnier (Which I was a little nervous about doing - was he going to be annoyed I didn't do his thing exactly? - but I kinda felt like I know the character better than he does, and as a "professional", it's incumbent upon me to make the Cameo as good as I can).

(7:31 pm)

Well, turns out I just about finished the entry before Mark and Jane called (I finished the last paragraph just now).

Then I chatted with Jane R. for a bit, and thought I'd watch some more of The Blacklist, then drifted off until just a few minutes ago.

But anyway...

There's not really much else to talk about...I'm lightly annoyed that Thursday's GenSpace Getty trip is the same day I'm scheduled to go to see a movie with Cary at the Beverly Hills Film Festival (I have so little going on in my life most days that I don't think anything should ever conflict with anything).

(It doesn't really "conflict", per se - the Getty is a day trip and we're supposed to get back around 4pm, while the movie is at 6:30, I think - but just makes for a very long day. If I have to choose, Cary wins, but I'd prefer if GenSpace would just move the day of the Getty trip so it's more convenient for me. That seems unlikely though...)

And I guess that's about it from here.

Till next time...
